Jan Włodek’s Youthful poems – an attempt of literary analysis of the volume

The article presents Jan Włodek’s youthful poems. Jan Włodek was a distinguished professor at the Jagiellonian University, the pioneer of Polish ecology, a legionnaire, diplomat, journalist, traveler and an excellent photographer. The poems were published along with the reprint of the manuscript thanks to the endeavours of his children-Zofia and Jan Marian Włodkowie. Most of the them are dated 1900 or 1901, some even more accurate-monthly or daily, suggesting that they were written when the author was at the age of 15-16 and still attended secondary school. Analyzing the volume, the author of the article looks for the key according to which the poems were arranged. Taking into account the joke on the cover, humorous comment in the poem Suplement, as well as other more subtle jokes, like the one from the poem To K…E…, she suspects that the volume was a form of parlour games, and perhaps it was a family entertainment, a present or some sort of evidence of Janek’s conscientious work in schools. Analyzing the diverse content of the poems (love confessions, longing, disappointment, philosophical musings and the delights of the world and nature) and the form (e.g. the sonnet, ode, idyll), she discovers the young author’s unusual erudition when compared with today’s teens, the knowledge of not only the ancient languages and cultures, but also philosophy, as well as our native literary achievements of the past epochs. The author of the article is far from glorifying the poems; she notices the linguistic awkwardness of the poet, his mistakes and stumbles, but she draws attention to the fact that Jan Włodek never became a poet and he did not develop his literary skills, and the volume of Youthful poems is the work of a very young man.
