Jednocześnie powstała łacińska struktura kościelna – najpierw biskupstwa w Przemyślu, Chełmie, Wołodymyrzu i Lwowie; a później metropolia halicka.

Latin influence in the Russian lands and the creation of the Metropolis of Lviv

The article presents a brief history of the relations between Poland and Rus in the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the Galicia-Volhynia Rus. Those relations were established at the beginning of the history of the two countries, which represented different cultural and religious circles. Special attention was drawn to the penetration of Latin culture into the Galicia-Volhynia Rus and historical processes which led to incorporating those lands into the Polish Crown, strengthening the Polish Roman Catholic rite there, and finally creating the Latin Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lviv. The main emphasis was put on religious matters in those processes. Due to the proximity to the Latin Poland, the Galicia-Volhynia Rus was a natural area where the church union stood a real chance of success. The political situation and dynastic connections between the princes of Rus and Poland created favourable conditions for the union. The implementation of the union plans was most likely in the thirteenth century, during the reign of princes Roman and Daniel. Those efforts were thwarted mainly by Tatar invasion, and the change in attitude of the Holy See to the Greek rite, as well as anti-Latin propaganda mounted by the Orthodox Church in Russia. From the beginning of the fourteenth century onwards there were no more union aspirations, but there was Polish expansion to the east, as a result of which, after Casimir the Great’s military expeditions, the principalities of Volodymyr and Halych were incorporated into Poland. At the same time a Latin church organization was created- first, bishoprics in Przemyśl, Chełm, Volodymyr and Lviv; and later the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Halych
