Podobna sytuacja miała miejsce w okresie II Rzeczypospolitej. Powstało wiele nowych instytucji edukacyjnych, a liczba nowych nauczycieli wzrosła.
The history of the Polish Teachers’ Union in the district of Kolbuszowa in the years 1905-1944 (part 1)
The first part of the article covers only the years 1905-1944, so the final Galician period of the Second Polish Republic and German occupation. the Polish Teachers’ Union in Poland was always a voluntary, independent and spontaneous organization of staff connected with education, higher education and science; pensioners; and educational and scientific institutions. In the district of Kolbuszowa its origins date back to the early twentieth century, and the following places were the centres where the Polish Teachers’ Union was formed: Kolbuszowa, Majdan Królewski, Sokołów and Raniżów. Here, primarily thanks to teachers, cultural and educational life was flourishing.
First, in the final Galician period the Polish Teachers’ Union collaborated, among others, with the Association of Folk Schools, the Polish Gymnastic Society “Falcon” and other cultural and educational associations in both Kolbuszowa and Sokołów. The same situation was during the Second Polish Republic. A lot of new educational institutions were created and the number of new teachers increased. All those factors contributed to the intensification of cultural and educational activities (theater and reading groups, meetings and conferences). They also provided financial assistance. The members of the Polish Teachers’ Union took an active part in the implementation of community actions, the aim of which was to build schools, folk houses, clubs, etc.
In the second part of the article the author focused on the history of education during the German occupation (1939-1944). It was a very difficult time. The German invader limited opportunities not only to obtain high school education or even higher one, but also a lot of schools were liquidated, and the occupant got rid of all the elements in programs which referred to any forms of patriotism and Polish culture. Despite the threat of restrictions and arrests, the majority of teachers showed courage and heroism. They taught young people in clandestine schools at the level of primary and secondary comprehensive education.
