The theme of the Mass for Poland celebrated by Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko at the Żoliborz church of St Stanislaus Kostka in Warsaw on 26 June 1983 was Pope John Paul II’s second apostolic journey to Poland.

A special reference to the Polish Pope’s teaching from the pilgrimage was the text of a sermon by the Solidarity chaplain, who pointed to the most important content in the Holy Father’s message. Furthermore, the main theme was expressed in other elements of the patriotic liturgy: the introduction, the prayer of the faithful, the artistic decoration placed in the chancel of the church, and the poetry read at the end of the Mass for Poland.

The article presents and analyses the various elements of the liturgy in the context of the theme. The Mass for Poland on 26 June 1983 sustained social joy and strengthened the unity and religious and patriotic values, which were the result of the pilgrimage of John Paul II. Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko deliberately chose such a theme for the liturgy to provide an opportunity for a renewed reflection on the word and an important social event, as well as to strengthen the Pope’s authority and point to his love for Poland.
